The toxic potential of dithiocarbamates fungicides widely used in world agriculture is well known, among which Mancozeb is one of the most used. This study aimed to evaluate the toxicity of Mancozeb, determining the LC50% of the product and the behavioral and histological changes observed in fish of the Pacamã species through acute and sublethal toxicity tests. The first experiment was carried out on Pacamã fingerlings exposed to dosages of 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 8mg/L of Mancozeb under the form ManzateWG®, for a total period of 96 hours in the acute experiment, and in the second experiment, fish were subjected to concentrations of 1/10 of those used in the acute experiment (0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.8mg/L, respectively), for 15 days in total. The 50% lethal concentration of ManzateWG® was calculated at the end of the acute experiment, presenting a value of 2.29mg/L at 96h for Pacamã fingerlings. A behavioral assessment was carried out through daily observation of the fish during both experiments, and an increase in mucus production was observed, as well as atypical social behavior in those exposed to the toxic agent. Histopathological evaluation was performed on livers collected after the end of the sublethal experiment, and the main hepatic alterations observed were cytoplasmic vacuolization, inflammatory infiltrate, and necrosis. Mancozeb has toxic potential and is capable of generating behavioral changes, as well as increasing the risk of liver damage in Pacamãs exposed to this compound.

BACKGROUND: These clinical standards aim to provide guidance for diagnosis, treatment, and management of drug-susceptible TB in children and adolescents.METHODS: Fifty-two global experts in paediatric TB participated in a Delphi consensus process. After eight rounds of revisions, 51/52 (98%) participants endorsed the final document.RESULTS: Eight standards were identified: Standard 1, Age and developmental stage are critical considerations in the assessment and management of TB; Standard 2, Children and adolescents with symptoms and signs of TB disease should undergo prompt evaluation, and diagnosis and treatment initiation should not depend on microbiological confirmation; Standard 3, Treatment initiation is particularly urgent in children and adolescents with presumptive TB meningitis and disseminated (miliary) TB; Standard 4, Children and adolescents should be treated with an appropriate weight-based regimen; Standard 5, Treating TB infection (TBI) is important to prevent disease; Standard 6, Children and adolescents should receive home-based/community-based treatment support whenever possible; Standard 7, Children, adolescents, and their families should be provided age-appropriate support to optimise engagement in care and clinical outcomes; and Standard 8, Case reporting and contact tracing should be conducted for each child and adolescent.CONCLUSION: These consensus-based clinical standards, which should be adapted to local contexts, will improve the care of children and adolescents affected by TB.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS) flares alternative to the conventional method, the intravenous route.Method: Observational and retrospective, during the months of July-Novembre 2020, coinciding with the period of mobility limitation in Spain due to SARS-CoV-2. The sample included 7 patients. The variables were: sex, age, type of MS, result on the expanded disability scale (EDSS), treatment, symptoms and evolution. The programs used were: patient history, outpatient dispensing and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).Results: The results of 7 patients with a mean age of 44.85±13 years were measured. All with a diagnosis of relapsing remitting MS. The mean EDSS score was 3. The main symptoms referred to were: paresthesia, muscle weakness and urinary incontinence. 85% of the patients evolved favorably. Another aspect that stands out is the comfort of the patient from home instead of going to the hospital. Discussion and conclusion: Oral administration of 1,400 mg prednisone for 5 days is a safe, effective and comfortable alternative as a treatment for acute outbreaks in multiple sclerosis. Objetivo: Evaluar la eficacia y seguridad de un tratamiento para los brotes por esclerosis múltiple (EM) alternativo al método convencional, la vía intravenosa. Método: Estudio retrospectivo y observacional durante los meses julio-noviembre 2020, coincidiendo con el período de limitación de movilidad en España por SARS-CoV-2. La muestra incluyó a 7 pacientes. Las variables fueron: sexo, edad, tipo de EM, resultado en escala expandida de discapacidad (EDSS), tratamiento, sintomatología y evolución. Los programas utilizados fueron: historia clínica del paciente, dispensación de pacientes externos y visualización resonancias magnéticas (RNM).Resultados: Se midieron los resultados de 7 pacientes con una edad media 44,85±13 años. Todos con diagnóstico EM remitente recurrente. La puntuación media de la EDSS fue 3. Los principales síntomas referidos fueron: parestesias, debilidad muscular e incontinencia urinaria. El 85% de los pacientes evolucionaron de forma favorable. Otro aspecto, es la comodidad del paciente desde su domicilio en lugar de acudir al centro hospitalario. Discusión y conclusión: La administración de 1.400 mg de prednisona oral durante 5 días, es una alternativa segura, eficaz y cómoda como tratamiento de los brotes agudos en la esclerosis múltiple. El abordaje multidisciplinar mejora la sobrecarga asistencial que sufre el sistema sanitario durante la pandemia evitando desplazamientos a urgencias hospitalarias. (AU)

The performance of a feedback control strategy in the operation of a sequencing batch reactor was evaluated. This strategy uses the online biogas flow measurements to define the duration of the reaction phase of each operating cycle, thereby increasing the energy production of the system and maximizing the methane production rate. The reaction phase is ended when the biogas flow rate reaches a sustained value significantly lower value than the maximum flow rate achieved, as a consequence of the depletion of the soluble chemical oxygen demand. The implementation of the depletion-time control was successful and reached a maximum methane production rate of 1.22 L CH4/d, showing an average productivity of 0.73 ± 0.3 L CH4/d. The reaction phase varied from 1.2 to 6 days with hydraulic retention times from 6 to 30 days. The use of this feedback control strategy increased the methane production and the energy production in 80% of the evaluated cycles (from 10.4 to 43.8%) compared to the operation of conventional AD without a control strategy. Furthermore, the strategy is easy to implement since it does not require complex calculations and uses a readily available biogas flow rate sensor.

Mezcal is an alcoholic artisanal drink made from agave plants in Mexico. Its production causes the generation of wastewater called vinasses, which are highly polluting residues due to its concentration of organic matter as chemical oxygen demand (COD) (35,000-122,000 mg/L) and acidity (pH < 4). Due to their organic content, these residues can be used in dark fermentation to obtain biogas, which is rich in hydrogen. In this work, the acclimation of inoculum by means of a dark fermentation process, in the presence of toxic compounds from mezcal vinasses was studied. The strategy of increasing the initial concentration of vinasse in each treatment cycle in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) reactor was applied. It was possible to obtain a maximum biogas production of 984 ± 187 mL/L, from vinasses (18,367 ± 1,200 mg COD/L), with an organic matter removal efficiency of 20 ± 1%. A maximum generation of volatile fatty acids (VFA) of 980 ± 538 mg/L equivalent to a production of 74 ± 21% of the influent concentration and removal rate of organic matter of 1,125 ± 234 mg COD/L d-1 equivalent to a removal efficiency of 20 ± 4% was obtained from vinasses with a concentration of 19,648 ± 1,702 mg COD/L.

La Pielonefritis por Escherichia coli con frecuencia es de diagnóstico confuso haciéndose necesario combinar pruebas de urología con las de imagenologías, pudiendo generar complicaciones renales hasta poder convertiste en un caso hepático grave por las lesiones que se les infrinja a los riñones, es por ello que esta investigación se planteo como objetivo caracterizar los casos de Pielonefritis por E. coli en el Hospital Naval de Guayaquil. Estudio descriptivo de corte transversal, con una muestra de 33 pacientes. Empleando como técnica de recolección de datos sus historias clínicas, pruebas de sedimento urinario, urocultivo en medio aerobico y pruebas de imagenología. Teniendo como resultado que el sexo femenino (60,61%; n=20/33), con un 60,61% (n=20/33) evidencian diabettus milletus, con grado de inducción primaria 24,24% (n=8/33), presentando dolor lumbar (100% n=33/33), con dolor al orinar y nauseas (90,91%; n=30/33), en los exámenes de urología las colonias/ml valores>105 fue de 57,58% (n=19/33) con E. coli (100%; n=33/33) y las pruebas de imagenología arrojaron que un 60,61% (n=20) evidencia gas en el colector solo sistema, confirmando el diagnóstico pielonefritis. En conclusión, por lo solapado que tiende a ser el diagnostico del Pielonefritis por E. coli deben combinarse las pruebas de urología y las de imágenes(AU)


Pyelonephritis by Escherichia coli is often of confused diagnosis making it necessary to combine urology tests with imaging, may cause renal complications until you can become a serious liver case due to injuries to the kidneys, That is why this research was aimed at characterizing the cases of Pyelonephritis by E. coli in the Naval Hospital of Guayaquil. Descriptive cross-sectional study, with a sample of 33 patients. Using as a data collection technique their clinical histories, urine sediment tests, uroculture in an aerobic environment and imaging tests. As a result, the female sex (60,61%; n=20/33), with 60.61% (n=20/33) showed diabettus milletus, with degree of primary induction 24.24% (n=8/33), presenting lumbar pain (100% n=33/33), with pain when urinating and nausea (90.91%; n=30/33), in urology examinations the colonies/ml values>105 was 57.58% (n=19/33) with E. coli (100%; n=33/33) and imaging tests showed that 60,61% (n=20) gas in the collector only system, confirming the diagnosis pyelonephritis. In conclusion, because of the overlapping that tends to be the diagnosis of Pyelonephritis by E. coli, urology and imaging tests should be combined(AU)

PURPOSE: Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) is the most frequent orthopedic procedure in cleft subjects. However, little is known about its effects on the mandible. The aim of this study was to investigate the spontaneous response of the mandibular teeth following RME. METHODS: This prospective cohort study was carried out with a sample of thirty participants with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP), 8-15 years old, who had transverse maxillary deficiency. Two participants were excluded. They were allocated into three groups: G1 (n = 10), G2 (n = 10), and G3 (n = 8). G1 was treated with a Fan-type expander; G2 with an iMini expander; and G3 with a Hyrax expander. Measurements were performed in Cone Beam CT scans obtained before treatment (T1) and 3 months post-expansion (T2). The primary outcomes were buccolingual inclination of mandibular first molars and canines, and intercanine and intermolar width at different levels. RESULTS: Dental changes were significant (P < 0.05) for intercanine width, increasing in G1 and G2, and for intermolar width, increasing in G2 and G3. There were no significant differences among groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: RME in UCLP subjects performed with these expanders may lead to significant spontaneous changes in both anterior and posterior region of the mandible.

In stream ecosystems, waterfalls intercept the fluvial continuum and limit the dispersion of aquatic organisms. However, the barrier effect may be minimized or absent for insects whose life cycle is not restricted to the aquatic environment (i.e., winged adults), such as the orders Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera (EPT). In this study, we investigated EPT diversity (abundance, richness, and composition) in savanna headwater streams (Cerrado Domain, Brazil) to investigate the hypothesis that large waterfalls have little effect on instream assemblage structure. During 2017 and 2018, we sampled EPTs and measured environmental conditions at reaches adjacent (downstream and upstream) to waterfalls (5 to 70 m high). We collected 2532 immature specimens of 33 genera, including the first record of 14 genera of Ephemeroptera, 11 Trichoptera, and three Plecoptera for the Tocantins State. Hydro-geomorphic and streambed conditions varied among sites, but they were not related to the presence of waterfalls. Assemblage structure was similar between downstream and upstream reaches, with no significant difference in taxa richness, abundance, and composition. This pattern was consistently observed considering all data combined, and each order separately. These results support the hypothesis that physical barriers have weak effects on EPT assemblages at small spatial scales, where strong dispersal and habitat similarity probably homogenizes the structure of local assemblages in stream corridors adjacent to large waterfalls. The study provides important information about factors driving the distribution of biodiversity in savanna streams, which are relevant to support conservation and management plans in the Brazilian Cerrado.

The objective of this study was to identify the prognostic value for survival of blood parameters in the immediate post-caesarean surgery period in kids born from pregnancy toxaemia (PT) goats. This study involved 10 PT goats, in which a caesarean surgery was performed. Twenty-five kids were born after caesarean surgery of which 16 survived. A blood sample was collected from the jugular vein of the 10 goats and from the kids immediately after caesarean surgery (within 15 min). There were differences between the kids that survived and the kids that did not survive concerning the blood levels of pH (7.22 vs 7.00), base excess (- 9 vs - 18 mmol/L), pCO2 (46 vs 62 mmHg) and L-lactate (5.6 vs 16 mmol/L). Maternal ketoacidosis due to PT has a negative impact on the survival rate of the offspring. This appears to be associated to a metabolic acidosis of the offspring. However, the only blood parameter in which there was a strong association between the maternal and newborn kids was blood urea nitrogen (r = 0.97).

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Vitamin D plays a role in the immune system, however studies regarding this are scarce. This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional status of vitamin D in patients with Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID) or Ataxia-Telangiectasia (A-T) and to relate it to body composition, inflammatory and bone metabolism markers. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a cross-sectional and controlled study involving 24 patients of both sexes (59.3% male), aged 8-56 years, with CVID (n=15) or A-T (n=9). The following variables were evaluated: body mass index (BMI), 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25 (OH) D), hepatic profile, parathormone, calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, interleukin 6 and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein. RESULTS: The median age was 26.0 years. A deficiency of 25 (OH) D was found in four A-T patients (44%) and two CVID patients (13%). Nine patients with CVI (60%) and six with A-T (66.7%) were overweight and underweight, respectively. There was a negative correlation between vitamin D and fat mass in the CVID group, and vitamin D and BMI in the A-T group. Vitamin D was negatively associated with the percentage of total fat among the patients (ß - 0.842, 95% CI: -1.5-0.17, p=0.015), R2=0.21, after adjusting for sex and age. CONCLUSION: Vitamin D deficiency occurred in a quarter of the patients although there was no difference between the patient and the control group; without association with bone and inflammation biomarkers. The percentage of fat and BMI were negatively associated with the concentrations of 25 (OH) D.

The influence of hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the microbial communities was evaluated in an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (AnSBR) using organic waste from a restaurant as the substrate. The relationship among Lactobacillus, Clostridium and Bacillus as key micro-organisms on hydrogen production from organic solid waste was studied. The effect of the HRT (8-48 h) on the hydrogen production and the microbial community was evaluated. Quantitative PCR was applied to determine the abundance of bacteria (in particular, Enterobacter, Clostridium and Lactobacillus genera). An AnSBR fermentative reactor was operated for 111 cycles, with carbohydrate and organic matter removal efficiencies of 80 ± 15·42% and 22·1 ± 4·49% respectively. The highest percentage of hydrogen in the biogas (23·2 ± 11·1 %), and the specific production rate (0·42 ± 0·16 mmol H2 gVSadded -1 d-1 ) were obtained at an HRT of 48 h. The decrease in the HRT generated an increase in the hydrogen production rate but decreasing the content of the hydrogen in the gas. HRT significantly influence the abundance of Enterobacter, Clostridium and Lactobacillus during the hydrogen production from food waste leading the hydrogen production as well as the metabolic pathways. The microbial analysis revealed a direct relationship between the HRT and the presence of fermentative bacteria (Enterobacter, Clostridium and Lactobacillus genera). Clostridium sp. predominated at an HRT of 48 h, while Enterobacter and Lactobacillus predominated at HRTs between 8 and 24 h. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Significance and Impact of the Study: It was demonstrated that hydrogen production using food waste was influenced by the hydraulic retention time (HRT), and closely related to changes in microbial communities together with differences in metabolic patterns (e.g. volatile fatty acids, lactate, etc.). The decrease in the HRT led to the dominance of lactic acid bacteria within the microbial community whereas the increase in HRT favoured the emergence of Clostridium bacteria and the increase in acetic and butyric acids. Statistical data analysis revealed a direct relationship existing between the HRT and the microbial community composition in fermentative bacteria. This study provides new insight into the relationship between the bioprocess operation and the microbial community to understand better and control the biohydrogen production.

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) exert a variety of immune and metabolic functions by binding to G-protein-coupled receptors, mainly free fatty acid receptor 2 (FFAR2). However, the effects of SCFAs and FFARs on bone remodeling, especially in alveolar bone, have been less explored. In this study, we investigated the influence of the SCFA/FFAR2 axis on alveolar bone. Bone samples from wild-type (WT) and FFAR2-deficient mice (FFAR2-/-) were analyzed using micro-CT, histology and qPCR. WT and FFAR2-/- animals received a high-fiber diet (HFD) reported to increase circulating levels of SCFAs. Additionally, we analyzed the effects of SCFAs and a synthetic FFAR2 agonist, phenylacetamide-1 (CTMB), on bone cell differentiation. The participation of histone deacetylase inhibitors (iHDACs) in the effects of SCFAs was further assessed in vitro. CTMB treatment was also evaluated in vivo during orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). FFAR2-/- mice exhibited deterioration of maxillary bone parameters. Consistent with this, FFAR2-/- mice exhibited a significant increase of OTM and changes in bone cell numbers and in the expression of remodeling markers. The HFD partially reversed bone loss in the maxillae of FFAR2-/- mice. In WT mice, the HFD induced changes in the bone markers apparently favoring a bone formation scenario. In vitro, bone marrow cells from FFAR2-/- mice exhibited increased differentiation into osteoclasts, while no changes in osteoblasts were observed. In line with this, differentiation of osteoclasts was diminished by SCFAs and CTMB. Moreover, CTMB treatment significantly reduced OTM. Pretreatment of osteoclasts with iHDACs did not modify the effects of SCFAs on these cells. In conclusion, SCFAs function as regulators of bone resorption. The effects of SCFAs on osteoclasts are dependent on FFAR2 activation and are independent of the inhibition of HDACs. FFAR2 agonists may be useful to control bone osteolysis.

Objetivou-se estudar o efeito do ômega 3 e da vitamina B12 no espermograma, na histomorfometria dos órgãos reprodutivos e na temperaturas do corpo com termografia infravermelha em ratos Wistar. Utilizaram-se 16 ratos, em quatro grupos (n=4), que receberam injeções diárias por 30 dias, sendo: grupo controle - solução salina; grupo ômega 3 - óleo de peixe 1g/kg; grupo B12 - vitamina B12 3µg; e grupo ômega 3 + B12 - óleo de peixe 1g/kg e vitamina B12 3µg. Imagens termográficas de áreas do corpo foram obtidas. No 30º dia, os ratos foram sacrificados e realizaram-se as análises de morfologia espermática e histomorfometria. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância e ao teste de Tukey a 5%. A temperatura da superfície do escroto foi superior no grupo B12 (P<0,05). Não houve diferenças entre grupos (P>0,05) para temperaturas do globo ocular. Houve correlação entre temperatura da superfície do escroto e porcentagem de gota citoplasmática distal (P=0,678). A elevação da temperatura do escroto resulta no aumento da porcentagem de gotas citoplasmáticas distais. A temperatura do globo ocular não sofre influência significativa do ômega 3 e da vitamina B12. O ômega 3 reduz o epitélio seminífero, e a vitamina B12 minimiza esse efeito.(AU)


The objective of this study was to study the effect of Omega 3 and vitamin B12 on spermogram, histomorphometry of reproductive organs and body temperature with infrared thermography in Wistar rats. Sixteen rats were used in four groups (n= 4) who received daily injections for 30 days. Control Group - saline solution; Group Omega 3 - fish oil 1g/kg; Group B12 - vitamin B12 3μg and Group Omega 3 + B12 - fish oil 1g/kg and vitamin B12 3μg. Thermographic images of body were obtained. On the 30th day the rats were sacrificed and analyzes of sperm morphology and histomorphometry were performed. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and Tukey's test at 5%. The surface temperature of the scrotum was higher in group B12 (P< 0.05). There were no differences between groups (P> 0.05) for eyeball temperatures. There was a correlation between scrotal temperature and distal cytoplasmic droplet (P= 0.678). Elevation of scrotum temperature results in an increase in the percentage of distal cytoplasmic droplets. The temperature of the eyeball is not significantly influenced by Omega 3 and vitamin B12. Omega 3 reduces the seminiferous epithelium and vitamin B12 minimizes this effect.(AU)

In this work, lemon and onion biomasses commonly found in street markets are for the first time used to develop a facile, fast and low-cost one-step microwave-assisted carbonization method for synthesis of highly fluorescent carbon dots (CDs). The structure and optical properties of CDs were investigated by TEM, XRD, XRF, UV-Vis, FTIR, and fluorescence spectroscopy. CDs displayed satisfactory optical pro-prieties, a high quantum yield of 23.6%, and excellent water solubility, and the particle size was 4.23-8.22 nm with an average diameter of 6.15 nm. An efficient fluorescent resonance energy transfer (FRET) between the CDs and riboflavin was achieved with CDs acting as donor and riboflavin as acceptor. A linear relationship between FRET and the riboflavin concentration from 0.10 to 3.0 μg/mL was observed, allowing the development of an accurate and fast analytical method to determine this vitamin in multivitamin/mineral supplements. Despite the potential interferences in these supplements, CDs were selective for riboflavin under optimized conditions. A paired t-test at a 95% confidence level indicated no statistically significant difference between the proposed and the reference methods. Recovery test presented values ranged from 96.0% to 101.4%. The limit of detection and relative standard deviation were estimated at 1.0 ng/mL and <2.6% (n = 3), respectively. CDs were successfully synthesized in a domestic microwave oven (1450 W, 6 min), presenting satisfactory parameters when compared with results of other studies reported in the literature, suggesting that the proposed method is a potentially useful method for the synthesis of CDs and determination of riboflavin.

The impact of high-refined carbohydrate (HC) diet on fat accumulation, adipokines secretion and systemic inflammation is well described. However, it remains unclear whether these processes affect bone remodeling. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of HC diet in the alveolar bone and femur parameters. METHODS: BalbC mice were fed with conventional chow or HC diet for 12 weeks. After experimental time maxillae, femur, blood and white adipose tissue samples were collected. RESULTS: The animals feed with HC diet exhibited considerable increase of adiposity index and adipose tissue levels of TNF-α, IL-6, IL-10, IL-1ß, TGF-ß and leptin. Microtomography analysis of maxillary bone revealed horizontal alveolar bone loss and disruption of trabecular bone in mice feed with HC diet. These deleterious effects were correlated with a disturbance in bone cells and an augmented expression of Rankl/Opg ratio. Consistently, similar effects were observed in femurs, which also exhibited a reduction in bone maximum load and stiffness. CONCLUSION: Our data indicates that HC diet consumption disrupts bone remodeling process, favoring bone loss. Underlying mechanisms relies on fat tissue accumulation and also in systemic and local inflammation.

In order to have an efficient operation, sequencing batch reactors (SBR) must support granular biomass with high conversion rates, settling properties, and be able to deal with the inherent variability of the composition of real wastewaters. In this study, the effect of the influent composition and the specific organic loading rate (Bx) on the granulation process was evaluated in two SBRs, fed with greywater (GW) and a synthetic medium (SM). The feeding with SM led to the formation of compact granular biomass, with a sludge volume index (SVI) of 22.4 mL g-1, and a zone settling velocity (ZSV) of 13.1 m h-1. In contrast, feeding with GW induced the formation of filamentous granules, with lower settling properties (SVI = 165 mL g-1 and ZSV = 10 m h-1), when the system was operated at high Bx (4.4 kg COD kg VSS-1 d-1). However, the reduction of the average Bx to 2 kg COD kg VSS-1 d-1 induced an improvement in the morphology and properties of the granules (SVI = 98 mL g-1 and ZSV = 13 m h-1). Furthermore, the kinetic analysis indicated that granules cultivated with SM were formed by fast growing microorganisms with a high cell yield, whereas those cultivated in GW presented a much lower cell yield.

OBJECTIVES: Three-dimensional evaluation of skeletal mandibular changes following Herbst appliance treatment. SETTING AND SAMPLE POPULATION: Retrospective case-control study, based on a sample size calculation. Twenty-five pubertal patients treated with Herbst appliance (HAG), and 25 matched Class II patients who received other non-orthopaedic dental treatments (CG). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Three-dimensional models were generated from pre-treatment (T0) and post-treatment (T1) cone beam computed tomograms. Volumetric registration on the cranial base was used to assess mandibular displacement; volumetric regional registration was performed to evaluate mandibular growth. Quantitative measurements of X, Y, Z and 3D Euclidian changes, and also qualitative visualization by colour-mapping and semi-transparent overlays were obtained. RESULTS: Downward displacement of the mandible was observed in both HAG and CG (2.4 mm and 1.5 mm, respectively). Significant forward displacement of the mandible was observed in the HAG (1.7 mm). HAG showed greater 3D superior and posterior condylar growth than the CG (3.5 mm and 2.0 mm, respectively). Greater posterior growth of the ramus was noted in the HAG than in CG. CONCLUSIONS: Immediately after Herbst therapy, a significant mandibular forward displacement was achieved, due to increased bone remodelling of the condyles and rami compared to a comparison group. Three-dimensional changes in the direction and magnitude of condylar growth were observed in Herbst patients.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether demographic characteristics or balance examination findings can predict the adherence of older people with instability to a vestibular rehabilitation programme. METHODS: A prospective case-control study was conducted of 120 patients aged 65 years or more (mean age, 77.3 ± 6.33 years). Two groups were classified according to patients' adherence with the follow-up post-rehabilitation protocol. Analysed variables included: age, sex, body mass index, Timed Up and Go test findings, computerised dynamic posturography, Dizziness Handicap Inventory scores and Short Falls Efficacy Scale - International questionnaire results, number of falls, and type of vestibular rehabilitation. RESULTS: Two groups were established: adherents (99 individuals) and non-adherents (21 individuals). There were differences between the groups regarding: sex (female-to-male ratio of 4.8:1 in adherents and 1.63:1 in non-adherents), age (higher in non-adherents) and voluntary movement posturographic test results (non-adherents had poorer scores). CONCLUSION: The patients most likely to abandon a vestibular rehabilitation programme are very elderly males with low scores for centre of gravity balancing and limits of stability.

Two experiments were performed, in which male Wistar Walker 256 tumor-bearing rats were inoculated with 4 × 10(7) tumor cells subcutaneously and received either creatine (300 mg/kg body weight/day; CR) or placebo (water; PL) supplementation via intragastric gavage. In experiment 1, 50 rats were given PL (n = 22) or CR (n = 22) and a non-supplemented, non-inoculated group served as control CT (n = 6), for 40 days, and the survival rate and tumor mass were assessed. In experiment 2, 25 rats were given CR or PL for 15 days and sacrificed for biochemical analysis. Again, a non-supplemented, non-inoculated group served as control (CT; n = 6). Tumor and muscle creatine kinase (CK) activity and total creatine content, acidosis, inflammatory cytokines, and antioxidant capacity were assessed. Tumor growth was significantly reduced by approximately 30 % in CR when compared with PL (p = 0.03), although the survival rate was not significantly different between CR and PL (p = 0.65). Tumor creatine content tended to be higher in CR than PL (p = 0.096). Tumor CK activity in the cytosolic fraction was higher in CR than PL (p < 0.0001). Blood pCO2 was higher in CT and CR than PL (p = 0.0007 and p = 0.004, respectively). HCO3 was augmented in CT compared to PL (p = 0.03) and CR (p = 0.001). Plasma IL-6 was lower and IL-10 level was higher in CR than PL (p = 0.03 and p = 0.0007, respectively) and TNF-alpha featured a tendency of decrease in CR compared to PL (p = 0.08). Additionally, total antioxidant capacity tended to be lower in CT than PL (p = 0.07). Creatine supplementation was able to slow tumor growth without affecting the overall survival rate, probably due to the re-establishment of the CK-creatine system in cancer cells, leading to attenuation in acidosis, inflammation, and oxidative stress. These findings support the role of creatine as a putative anti-cancer agent as well as help in expanding our knowledge on its potential mechanisms of action in malignancies.
